Most of us have read about the benefits doing crossword puzzles or brain teasers have on our minds ability to function at a higher level. What about joint movement? Do properly moving joints impact our brains ability to function?Every time we move tiny movement receptors called mechanoreceptors, found in our joints, send input into our brain. This input stimulates our brain and keeps it ‘working’. Our brains are no different than a muscle, it needs constant stimulation or it will quickly start to atrophy. Roger Sperry who received the Nobel Prize for his brain research states movement of the spine is especially important for our brains to function properly.
Activities such as coordination, concentration, learning, emotions and even immunoactive organs depend on our brains being stimulated. If our joints are subluxated resulting in decreased motion, our brains will be the first to suffer!
In our current environment where desk jobs and video games are becoming more prevalent and movement is decreasing each and every day we need to stop and remember you cannot separate structure from function.
Most people are unaware how essential water is for every function in the body. Did you know not being properly hydrated could increase your allergies and then lead to being sick? Joe Ferrara, PhD has found that sub-optimal hydration levels cause your body to release more histamine. This release of histamine can make you more susceptible to allergens (dust, pollen, etc). With an increase level of histamine in the system it then elicits the release of the hormone cortisol. One side effect of cortisol is the suppression of the immune system. Histamine also causes the breakdown of the amino acid tryptophan in the liver. Tryptophan is needed by the brain to produce the neurotransmitter serotonin. Water is needed to transport tryptophan to the brain. So even depressive states are being linked back to chronic dehydration.
The most frequent side effect of dehydration is lack of energy. Dr. Ferrara has found that for every 1% drop of water in your cells you will have a 10% drop in energy! One of the easiest ways to tell if you are dehydrated is your urine. The more tea color (dark brown) your urine looks then the more dehydrated you are. Your urine should be clear or very light yellow except just after ingesting your multi-vitamins.
Why are we dehydrated?
Coffee, tea, juices and soda pop (diet and regular) and alcohol all contribute to leaching water out of your cells. The function of water is to help transport, dilute and detoxify your system. Smog, pesticides and processed foods all leave an abundant of pollution in your system. This pollution needs to have a transport mechanism for removal. If you are drinking something other than water throughout the day and consume processed foods then your hydration levels may be in jeopardy.
How much water should I drink a day?
Most health professionals reccomend drinking about 3 liters per day. Now remember if you are also consuming any of the products that cause you to be dehydrated then your levels will have to be increased. Plus, make sure you are using a SIGG water bottle which does not leach harmful chemicals into your fluid.

I love sweet treats as much as the next person so it pains me to say this, but eating too much sugar causes wrinkles. Sugar triggers a natural process called glycation, which is the same chemical reaction that turns meat brown when you cook it. The sugars bind with tissues to form harmful molecules, called advanced glycation end products (ironically known as AGEs), which damage elastin and collagen -- two substances your skin needs to stay supple and elastic. AGEs also damage the kidneys, brain and other essential organs.A 2007 study in the British Journal of Dermatology found that sugar's effects on the skin begin to show at about age 35 and become more pronounced as you get older. And it's not just the obvious culprits, like soda and candy, that cause damage; other foods with a high glycemic index, like white bread, pasta and potatoes also cause the formation of AGEs, because they are quickly converted to sugar in the bloodstream. To make matters worse, AGEs also make the skin more susceptible to sun damage, which in turn accelerates the glycation process.
It's hard to resist the lure of chips, cookies and french fries, but cutting down on sugary and starchy foods is the first step toward repairing AGE damage and preventing further glycation from occurring. The GI Database, maintained by the University of Sydney in Australia, is a handy tool that will help you determine the glycemic index of your food and includes many well-known brands and products. (Turn tonight's dinner into tomorrow's great skin.)
Antioxidants are another ally in your fight against glycation. These substances fight free radicals that are caused by sun exposure and can prevent new wrinkles from forming. Excellent sources of antioxidants include tomatoes, red grapes, dark green and orange veggies, acai, pomegranate and tomatoes. They can also be used topically and should be applied twice daily or 30 minutes before sun exposure.

"Scientific research has shown us that strength training improves muscular strength, bone density, and glucose control; reduces hypertension, symptoms of arthritis, and depression; and helps boost self-esteem and self-confidence. While there is solid scientific evidence that strength training helps people who have heart disease to become stronger and healthier, no research to date has demonstrated that strength training can actually reduce the risk of getting heart disease in the first place. To do this type of research you need to study a large population for a long time. The October 23rd issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association reported on just such a study. Investigators from Harvard University studied 44,452 men enrolled in the Health Professional’s Follow-up Study. These men were followed every two years from 1986 to 1998 to assess newly diagnosed cases of heart disease and death from heart disease. In addition to asking about heart disease, the investigators also assessed the amount and intensity of physical activity and the types of physical activity (if any) the men participated in.
The results were very interesting. As has been seen before, increased total physical activity was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a dose dependent manner (i.e., the more physical activity someone participated in, the greater the reduction in heart disease risk and vice versa). In addition, exercise intensity (not just the amount of exercise) was associated with an additional risk reduction. What is exciting about this study is that they also looked at whether weight lifting reduced CVD risk. And it did! The men who strength trained more than 30 minutes per week had an approximate 30% reduction in CVD. This is the first research study to show a reduction in risk of CVD with strength training." -The John Hancock Center for Phyical Activity & Nutrition, Tufts University

The charity said resolutions which focus on issues such as the need to lose weight or job worries create a negative self-image.
And if the plans fail to materialize, that could trigger feelings of failure and inadequacy, the charity said.
Mind chief executive Paul Farmer said focusing on problems or insecurities can lead to feelings of hopelessness, low self-esteem and even mild depression.
"We chastise ourselves for our perceived shortcomings and set unrealistic goals to change our behavior, so it's not surprising that when we fail to keep resolutions, we end up feeling worse than when we started," he said.
"In 2009, instead of making a New Year's resolution, think positively about the year to come and what you can achieve."
Instead of easily broken resolutions, the charity has suggested a few steps to improve all-round mental health in 2009:
· Being active - exercise releases endorphins and even a gentle stroll is beneficial for mental well-being
· Going green - evidence has shown that connecting with nature can boost moods
· Learn something new - it will keep minds stimulated and give confidence
· Give back to the community - it can be just as rewarding for you as those you choose to help

1. Inoculate Yourself Against Toxic Media
Limit your exposure to negative news. Your time is valuable. Don't waste it listening to melodramatic media personalities scream and yell hysterically at everyone - including you. It induces anxiety and suppresses joy. Just because prime time doesn't cover good news, doesn't mean there aren't beautiful things going on in the world. There are! But you need to look elsewhere for them.
2. Set Your Day Right
Each day provides the opportunity to choose between thoughts and feelings that add to your energy or deplete it. In the morning your mind is open, expanded and receptive to change. This is the ideal time to dwell upon what you want; luxuriate in positive outcomes and cultivate deliciously wonderful feelings.
3. Fear is Not Your Friend. Rise above it.
The root meaning of the word crisis is to decide. In crisis our first reaction is to make decisions out of fear. These are rarely sound decisions. Fear is not good for your chemistry, creativity, intuition or clarity. When you catch yourself being fearful - Stop! Step back, take a breath, get centered and know that there's always a higher plan. To discover it you need to feel good first. Feeling good expands your perception of reality, allowing you to see new solutions and make better decisions. Make a deliberate effort to look for the silver lining in any given situation. The only thing that blocks the flow of joy and abundance is fear: Fear of failure, fear of disgrace, fear of poverty, fear of rejection, fear of loss. Counterbalance fear with self-care. Dwell on what you want to have happen, not on what you're afraid might happen. Take extra care to relax and nurture your sense of self and well-being.
4. Practice Forgiveness
When someone upsets you, it upsets you! The moment you notice all the uncomfortable sensations that arise when you're angry, frustrated or fearful - Stop! Forgive yourself for getting irritated. Send love to people that annoy you. I know it's hard, but it's worth it. As you get better and better at forgiveness, and sending love, negative emotional charge will dissipate, you'll feel happier and situations will resolve or disappear altogether.
5. Hold the Highest Vision
Sympathizing or "feeling the pain" of friends and loved ones is not healthy or helpful. Instead, hold the highest vision for them, even if they can't see it for themselves. When you see the highest good for people, you are lending your energy productively to help them. Know that the positive visions you hold for others and for the world have an impact. Your highest vision can change circumstances for the better.
6. Obliterate Problems-Invite Miracles
In meditation, pray to open your heart and mind to allow miracles. Remember that miracles are natural and all you need to do is get out of the way and allow them in. Affirmation: "I am inviting miracles into my life."
7. Give Thanks
Look for positive shifts, look for goodness, no matter how small, and quietly say "Thank You." Gratitude builds a resonant energy field that opens the flow of grace in your life.
This Christmas, while out shopping, make a conscious decision and purchase at least two items made in America. Simply check the label before purchasing your item. Quickly, you will notice how hard it is to find products made in the U.S.A.By consciously choosing products made in the U.S.A. you will place a demand on that product, which will place a demand on the retailers of that product. Immediately, your purchase creates a demand on the manufacture of the product, creating more jobs for Americans and energizing our economy from within.
If you really want to see change happen, make use of a powerful resource, your money! The more products we purchase that are made in America, the more secure our economic future becomes.
Some people call this “Patriotic Spending” we prefer to call it “Buying with Purpose.” When you start "Buying with Purpose," and purchase products made in America, you become apart of the solution, apart of the change.

2. Now watch them crawl right into your mouth!
In a USDA Human Nutrition Research Center laboratory, neuroscientists discovered that feeding blueberries to laboratory rats slowed age-related loss in their mental capacity, a finding that has important implications for humans.
The compound that appears responsible for this neuron protection, anthocyanin, also gives blueberries their color and might be the key component of the blueberry’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Blueberries, along with other colorful fruits and vegetables, test high in their ability to subdue free radicals. These free radicals, which can damage cell membranes and DNA through a process known as oxidative stress, are blamed for many of the dysfunctions and diseases associated with aging.
I take full responsibility for where I am today.
I understand it is not what happens to me that is important; it is how I react to what happens to me. I have the choice to point fingers and place blame on others. I also have the choice to learn, grow and find the opportunity in each problem that comes my way.
Each and everyday I will look at the abundance around me. I will look at the marvels nature unfolds with ease. I will enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Each and everyday I choose to find something new about me to be proud of.
I understand that my health is the only true wealth and with my health I can achieve anything!
